Frequency:
- Apply the solution to the scalp once daily in the evening.
- Patients are instructed to start with applying 2-3x/week for a few weeks and then increasing to once daily as tolerated.
Dosage:
- Apply the rapamycin solution directly to the scalp, particularly in areas that require treatment. Avoid applying it to the hair as much as possible; the goal is to get the solution onto the scalp.
Preparation:
- Ensure that the scalp is clean and dry. If you’ve just washed your hair, make sure it's completely dry before applying the topical rapamycin.
Application:
- Apply the solution directly to the scalp.
- Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips to spread the solution evenly and increase absorption into the skin.
- Leave the solution on the scalp overnight and wash it off in the morning.
Symptoms to Monitor:
- Reduction in Hair Shedding: One of the first signs that topical rapamycin is working may be a decrease in the amount of hair shedding. Note: Some patients can notice an increase in shedding temporarily before new growth begins.
- Increased Hair Density: Over time, you may observe an increase in hair density, meaning that the hair appears fuller and thicker.
- Improved Hair Growth: Rapamycin may stimulate the growth of new hair by promoting follicle health and reducing the miniaturization of hair follicles.
- Better Hair Quality and Texture: Hair quality, including its texture and strength, may improve with consistent use of topical rapamycin.
- Reduction in Scalp Irritation: If you experience scalp irritation, redness, or inflammation, rapamycin’s anti-inflammatory properties might help reduce these symptoms.
- Slowing or Halting of Hair Loss Progression: In addition to promoting new growth, rapamycin may help stabilize hair loss, slowing or halting the progression of androgenetic alopecia.
- Increased Hair Coverage: Over time, you may notice better coverage in previously thinning areas, as the hair becomes thicker and more evenly distributed.
- Hairline Improvement: Rapamycin may help in restoring a receding hairline or filling in areas where the hairline has thinned.
Tolerance:
Be aware of potential side effects like scalp irritation, redness, or itching. If these occur, they may decrease over time as your scalp adjusts to the treatment. Persistent issues should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
